Captain Marvel: Non-Spoiler Review

Updated: Apr 16, 2019

Captain Marvel is Marvel Studio’s latest film that hit the theatres this week and here is our non-spoiler review of the film. Let’s look at some positive aspects of the film: 1) Action-packed: The film has some good and enjoyable action sequences. The first and the second act has well-choreographed action sequences which gives you a sense of direction in which the film is going and how strong of a character Captain Marvel is. The film gives us an idea of how strong the character will be when she will appear in Avengers: Endgame.2) Nick Fury: Samuel L Jackson as young Nick Fury is incredible. The character development and the way he carries himself in the film is brilliant. The bond between Carol & Nick is very well done and has a very different connect to it.

3) Story: The film for the most part stays true to its comics. An origin story is what the film sums up to be. Some scenes from the film were a throwback to Iron Man 1 and Captain America: The First Avenger. But there are more negative aspects to the film then positive:a) Brie Larson as Captain Marvel: No matter how much you try, you just cannot see Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. She does not have the charisma to be a strong female superhero. One ends up comparing her character with Wonder Woman (for obvious reasons). Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is the definition of a strong female superhero.

b) Pacing and tone: The film is unevenly paced and there are moments in the film which just take you out of the film. After all these years, pacing problems is something that we cannot from a Marvel film. The film has a very dark tone considering its an origin story. There are some scenes in the film where one cannot tell what is even going on. The color choice for some of the action sequences could have much better. c) Nothing new: The film had nothing new to offer. The film had good action sequences but none of them would be remembered after a month. Like for example the no man’s land scene in Wonder Woman, still gives you the goosebumps. There are no such scenes in the film that gives you goosebumps or makes you jump from your seat. There were hardly a few heroic moments in the film which did not feel that heroic as well. They were average. Overall, we would say it a film that falls short of many things but is still enjoyable at times. There are things in the film that could have been done better. You never know, in time, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel would grow on you in the upcoming Marvel films.

We would rate the film 5.5/10.
